Through the Sandbox Lens #18 — The Raffles Hotel, Singapore

You’re probably thinking…The Raffles Hotel and budget travel really aren’t a match. However, it costs absolutely nothing to wander around the outside of this Singapore landmark and have some fun taking shots of the beautiful building. I’m stopping in Singapore in January on my way to Chiang Mai, and I’m planning to splurge and have a Singapore Sling at the Raffles bar. When I was there the last time the bar wasn’t open, and my time in Singapore was very limited. During that trip I stayed across the bridge in Joha Baru. BIG MISTAKE. The accommodation was crap and the traffic between JB and Singapore was atrocious. Anyone who has been to Singapore knows that a travelers biggest expense here is an affordable place to stay. After perusing the hostel booking sites I have decided to give couch surfing a try. Earlier this year I hosted a couch surfer. That was a good experience, so now I am going to be the surfer. I have found an available couch with someone who likes to travel and is close to my age. The Raffles it won’t be, but it will be a great adventure.

  1. Pretty hotel, too bad the bar was closed. Ryan and I had a 2-nights transit in Singapore back in 2007, and it’s like food heaven for me there.

  2. Oooh, do they still have red bean ice cream for tea?

  3. Raffles is a top tip for budget travellers in Singapore. As long as you have some smart-ish clothes in yr backpack, you can get a drink in the bar which has a wonderful colonial feel. Order a G&T and monkey nuts and enjoy the cool breeze from the fans. Particularly fun throwing the monkey nut shells on the floor which seems to be a bizarre custom there.

  4. Sophie, I didn’t stop for tea. Maybe I’ll do that this winter.

  5. I would agree, probably not discount accommodations
