Everyday Portugal

Welcome to week 357 (2/1/2018) of Travel Photo Thursday, and to Everyday Portugal. During my 2 months of slow travel in Portugal in 2016, I spent a lot of time wandering around with my camera capturing everyday life. Here’s a peek at what I’ve dubbed “Everyday Portugal”.

Wash day in Portugal

Big city or small town, it’s common to see laundry fluttering in the wind outside many residential windows. I captured this shot in Lisbon. This picture is also seen in the windows of many Portuguese homes. I was told it is a sign that the people living in the house are devout Catholics.

Alvor, Portugal: On Guard

Alvor

Alvor is a quaint little seaside village in Portugal’s Algarve, and home to at least one super cute guard dog. Welcome to week 281 (6/9/2016) of Travel Photo Thursday. My brain is mush after interviewing 60+ students the last two days, and hearing about their final presentations. Those happen next week. This is the shortest Travel Photo Thursday in a while, but I think you will like it.

We’re pretty easy going here at BTS, but please remember to follow a few guidelines…

I love the dog and cat culture of Europe. When I was in Portugal and Spain I was always coming across cats hanging out in the sunshine, and they all looked very well cared for. Dogs are always being walked. Owning a pet and living in an apartment doesn’t seem to be an issue. This brings me to my little minibus jaunt to the lovely seaside village of  Alvor. I hopped off the bus and decided to head up the hill. After admiring the village church I headed down towards the water. Ambling through the lovely little streets I looked up and here was the hind end of a white dog standing on a balcony. I kept snapping as I headed down and hill and here is my favorite shot of this cute little guy guarding the family balcony. He was definitely interested in me and my snapping, but he never made a sound. Made me wonder if guard dog was not his chosen profession 🙂 Isn’t he cute?

Windows around the World

Windows

Windows and doors are favorite photo ops when I’m traveling, and I know I’m not alone. Welcome to Week 280 (6/2/2106) of Travel Photo Thursday. The end of the semester will dominate the next few weeks, so little time for anything else. This post will not be particularly wordy. I think that the beautiful windows speak for themselves. Enjoy!

I loved the windows in Prague and managed to come away with several beautiful shots. These two I took in the Old Town, where it’s next to impossible to walk more than 30 seconds without taking a photo or two.

Gorgeous symmetry! Prague is also really big on window boxes with lots of lovely details.

As lovely as Porto is, I was getting a little weary of the constant rain, cold, and wind. On my second last day in the city, I was treated to a late afternoon break in the weather. I took it as a sign that I really should head across the river to Gaia and a tour of the wine cellars at the famed House of Sandeman, who are celebrating 225 years of winemaking this year!

Portugal: Beautiful Porto

Posted by on Feb 18, 2016 in Destinations, Portugal, Travel Photo Thursday | 22 comments

Welcome to another week of Travel Photo Thursday, week 266 (2/18/2016), and beautiful, rainy Porto.

This is a very quick post for me this week. I am back in Barcelona, and had a very trying day yesterday. My wallet was stolen on the subway, and I am still dealing with all of that. I didn’t have much in the wallet, thankfully! However, I had a credit card, which I am still a little concerned about. I filed a report with the police and also reported to Mastercard that the card has been stolen. However, I’m dealing with Korea regarding the stolen credit card and that makes me nervous. I’m sure all will be okay! I hope you enjoy this week’s photo.

Porto, Portugal: Livraria Lello & Irmao

Posted by on Feb 12, 2016 in Destinations, Portugal, Travel Photo Thursday | 13 comments

Welcome to another week of Travel Photo Thursday, week 265 (2/11/2016), and Porto’s stunning Livraria Lello & Irmao.

You might be wondering exactly what Livraria Lello & Irmao is, or maybe you’ve been lucky enough to visit this little gem of a bookstore in Porto’s historic downtown. Here’s what TIME has to say about Lello…

“Rumor has it J.K. Rowling was inspired by Livraria Lello while writing Harry Potter (and teaching English in Portugal). It doesn’t take long to appreciate Lello’s potential as muse: a stained-glass atrium puts the spotlight on the bookshop’s deep red staircase, spectacular enough to stop you in your tracks. ” (Time: THE FIFTEEN COOLEST BOOKSTORES FROM AROUND THE WORLD).

The store’s neo-gothic facade is gorgeous, but with everything that’s going on around, it doesn’t really stand out! You’ll also want to take note of the red building across the street from the entrance. That’s where you buy your entrance ticket. Yes, there is an entrance fee. TIME helped to make the store very famous. With some many people just dropping by to see the store, selling books became a bit of a challenge. Now, visitors pay a 3 Euro admission, and should you make a purchase that 3 Euro will be credited towards your purchase (excludes the coffee available upstairs).
