Alvor, Portugal: On Guard

Alvor is a quaint little seaside village in Portugal’s Algarve, and home to at least one super cute guard dog. Welcome to week 281 (6/9/2016) of Travel Photo Thursday. My brain is mush after interviewing 60+ students the last two days, and hearing about their final presentations. Those happen next week. This is the shortest Travel Photo Thursday in a while, but I think you will like it.

We’re pretty easy going here at BTS, but please remember to follow a few guidelines…

To join in the Travel Photo Thursday fun simply post a photo on your blog.

Return here and place your link in the Mr. Linky at the bottom of this post.

Please post a link to a post featuring a travel photo, not simply a link to your blog.

Leave a comment before you go. I do read each and every one, and always try to respond.

The Twitter hashtag for Travel Photo Thursday is #TPThursday.

Only one link per blog, please. Multiple links will be removed.

As a courtesy, please post a link to Budget Travelers Sandbox in your post.

I love the dog and cat culture of Europe. When I was in Portugal and Spain I was always coming across cats hanging out in the sunshine, and they all looked very well cared for. Dogs are always being walked. Owning a pet and living in an apartment doesn’t seem to be an issue. This brings me to my little minibus jaunt to the lovely seaside village of  Alvor. I hopped off the bus and decided to head up the hill. After admiring the village church I headed down towards the water. Ambling through the lovely little streets I looked up and here was the hind end of a white dog standing on a balcony. I kept snapping as I headed down and hill and here is my favorite shot of this cute little guy guarding the family balcony. He was definitely interested in me and my snapping, but he never made a sound. Made me wonder if guard dog was not his chosen profession 🙂 Isn’t he cute?

Alvor’s cute dogs…

On a side note, the village is lovely. I was so busy walking along the inner harbor and the marsh that I never did make it to the main beach (perfect reason to go back). The paddlers were having a great time!

I also dined on the best grilled octopus ever!

  1. The dog sure seems interested in you! 🙂
Loved the seaside shot! Perfect travel photo!

  2. That plate of food has made my mouth water – at 5:30 a.m.!! And I love that inquisitive fellow watching you from the balcony. If it were video I bet his tail would be wagging.

  3. I’veheard a bit about Portugal just lately as a tourist destination, perhaps Portugal is calling to me. Happy travels.

  4. I’ve read a bit about travel to Portugal just lately – I think Portugal must be calling to me. Happy travels.

  5. …and where is the photo of the church you went to see? The grilled octopus certainly look tempting

  6. Hey – we’ve swapped continents this week, Nancie 🙂 Very cute dog. But then all dogs are cute, really.

  7. He is a beautiful dog and I can taste the octopus all the way over here in Australia. I’ve not been to Alvor but I do love portugal.

  8. Seems like the dog / cat in Spain and Portugal is very similar to the one in California. In here, half of the state goes to brunch with their dogs on Saturdays and Sundays. So, it is kind of fun observing all the dogs waiting for their owners in the patios. Alvor looks like the perfect small, beach town. I would like to try that octopus.

  9. Love the dog! We never made it to Algarve when we went to Portugal around the same time you did. That’s such a scenic photo. I’ve never found grilled octopus appealing but your photo makes me want to try one. 🙂

  10. That’s a bigger dog than I would have expected in an apartment. He looks curious indeed, and the octopus looks delicious.

  11. I’m going to have to give that grilled octopus a try – MMM! There’s another little village near Alvor called Ferragudo where, as a friend describes, the dogs “walk themselves” and you’ll see one or two walking very purposely on their way to wherever with a big doggy smile. Love it!

    • Hi Anita. I love octopus. In fact, I had some last night. What I feasted on in Alvor was the best I’ve ever had. It was perfectly grilled in a bit of olive oil, and the potatoes were fantastic, too! I will put Ferragudo on my must see list for next time!
