Welcome to another week of Travel Photo Thursday. My mantra these days seems to be “I’m busy, I’m busy”. 🙂 Final exams begin today, and by next Wednesday my semester grinds to a screeching halt. Can you see me doing a little jig here? 🙂 This weeks photos are from Buddhas’s birthday bash in Seoul a few weeks ago. The Seoul Lantern Festival is one of the biggest festivals of the year in Seoul and in Korea. Festivities range over a period of about a week and range from lantern exhibits to dancing in the streets. These shots were taken at the Sunday market in front of Jogyesa Temple in downtown Seoul. Here, I found a bit of everything; ceremonies honoring Buddha, monks from around the world, dancing, and the list goes on. Buddha’s Birthday follows the lunar calendar, and this year fell on Monday, May 28th.

Lanterns at the entrance to Jogyesa Temple.
This tree is directly in front of Joyyesa Temple, headquarters for Korea’s Zen Buddhists. I have taken many photos of the tree over the years. Look at the tree trunk carefully. Does it remind you of the Buddha?

This is “THE” festival of the year in Seoul and Korea. The date changes every year (although almost always in May), so be sure to check the dates before you make your travel plans to attend next years Lantern Festival.
You can easily spend a weekend or more taking in the festivities, and everything is FREE!

I really like these shots, probably my favorite of your TPT sets. I was in Daegu last year for about two weeks but unfortunately was too busy there to go elsewhere.
The photos are so beautiful and colourful! The lanterns are stunning – it must take ages to hang them all. My favourite photo is the one of the traditional hats. Are they painted or embroidered?
Really love the colors of the lanterns. Your shot of the tree is enough to make me want to pack up and go there! But very nice suggestion to visit during the lantern festival. That’s something to look forward to next year.

It is like the color is screaming life and fun and festivities. I like the contrast of the stairway and its calm appearance. Great series of shots Nancie. Hope life calms a bit for you in the near future.

Have one more day of exams. Everything will be a wrap by Wednesday. I’m heading to Prague for a month, and then back to Korea for August. I’ll probably do some in country traveling.
Yes, I can see the shape of Buddha in the tree. Very symbolic. Through your photos, Korea seems very bright and cheery.

I was really happy with that shot of the tree. From that angle I think the trunk looks like Buddha!

I’ve been to Asia couple times – but never in Korea. Looking at those pictures I am wondering – how come? 🙂 Definitely have to plan trip to Korea.
