Last Updated on October 4, 2021 by Nancie

Here we are for week 186 of  Travel Photo Thursday, welcome! I’m pretty much settled here in Penang, adjusting to the tropical heat, and enjoying the sights and sounds of the island. This week I want to share with you a couple of shots of Penang’s street cats. Have a look!

To join in the Travel Photo Thursday fun simply post a photo on your blog.

Return here and place your link in the Mr. Linky at the bottom of this post.

Please post a link to a post featuring a travel photo, not simply a link to your blog.

Probably not what you are expecting…:)

Penang Street Art

This one has a very Japanese “feel”, to me. I think it’s the little figures surrounding the cat. Would love to get a shot without the motorcycles. Hopefully I’ll get back that way again before I leave.

That’s my trishaw driver in the first shot. He loved posing with the murals, and was fantastic model. Hiring a trishaw is a great way to explore Georgetown, and visit the colorful murals scattered throughout. An hour will cost you only 40 Malaysian ringgits (approx. $12.00US).

You’ll find these two “street cats” on  Lebuh Armenian, one of Georgetown’s more popular streets.

Have you explored Georgetown in a trishaw? What did you think?

  1. Okay, now those are the kind of street cats I really like. Amazing art! And yes, I am finally back in the world of strong internet signals, electrical power that doesn’t burn out computers in five minutes. . .it is blogger heaven being home!

    • Welcome back, Jackie! My Internet here in Penang isn’t that bad, but certainly nothing like Korea. I never realize how well wired we are in Korea!

  2. There are supposedly 101 Lost Kittens in George Town’s Street Art scene. Have you found all of them? It’s funny what you said about the motorcycles blocking your photo. I once had to park my van really close to some street art and felt badly about all the photos that I’d be messing up.

    • Hi Michele. Parking is not exactly easy in Georgetown. It’s easy for the art to get “parked in”. No, I haven’t found 10 yet, so I will have to keep looking. fun!

  3. You tricked me Nancie. Your trishaw driver is the star of the first photo. Was he of Indian descent? I love riding in trishaws. I hope you are enjoying your break Nancie.

    • Hi Jan! Yes, he was quite a character, and is of Indian descent. I have the feeling he is probably the most photographed trishaw driver in Panang.

  4. Not what I was expecting at all. But quirky and different and amusing. Hope you’re still enjoying lovely Pengang.

  5. Not what I expected, but the murals are wonderful! I love street art. Your trishaw driver looks like a real character! Glad to hear you’re enjoying Penang.

  6. I think it’s hilarious that they have so many murals dedicated to… CATS! did they have any other type of murals around the city?

I can’t wait to be able to explore Southeast Asia next year. Really looking forward to it 🙂

  7. I didn’t realize cats were so revered in Penang. Love your trishaw driver posing in your first photo. Sounds like a cool way to get around.
(Such a tragedy with flight 17, eh? Sad)

  8. I love when street animals are embraced by a culture! In both Greece and Bosnian there were tons of stray dogs everywhere (although no art work of them on the street;-)

  9. That was totally not what I expected but those street art cats are so adorable. Loved it! I like the one with the Japanese feel. I’m glad you’re enjoying your time in Penang. Safe travels!

  10. A trishaw? First I’ve heard of it. I agree that the second mural has a very Japanese look about it. Very cool. I actually like the motorcycle handlebars in the pic — adds to the quirkiness.

  11. Hi Nancie, I so adore these cat murals. I particularly like the very first one with your rickshaw driver. His presence in the photos made me appreciate the size of the cat. Pretty amazing. I haven’t been to Penang but I heard about the great arts and the amazing food. Have some good bites for me! Enjoy!

  12. How cute! And even better that your ricksaw driver posed with the mural. I’m going to be in Penang sometime early 2015 probably, and I really hope I won’t encounter the tropical heat!

  13. Great place to cycle around and take photos with the mural arts. The place is closed for cycling on Sunday morning, so you are free to cycle around and not afraid of the traffic. A must do in Penang!
