Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, lies on the Atlantic coast and boasts a number of scenic beaches. It’s an ideal getaway for those looking for a city break, along with a chance to relax at the beach.
Being right on the Atlantic, the beaches have something of a reputation to uphold, and there are quite a few which make the visit worthwhile. A day at the beach, while on vacation in Lisbon, is a nice and simple activity that can be both relaxing and rejuvenating.
Carcavelos
Carcavelos is a picturesque location, situated just 600 metres from the train station in the main town, beside the historical São Julião da Barra fortress. The beach provides fun opportunities for visitors to surf and play beach soccer. These activities, surfing bars, and a number of trendy restaurants make it a popular beach destination with the younger generation.
Meco
A nudist beach, set in a very secluded area of Lisbon, Meco became popular in the 1970s as one of the first ever nudist beaches. The surrounding area attracts an artistic clientele, lending to its laid-back atmosphere. It’s very popular with European tourists, and features a number of cliff-tops providing sweeping views of the surrounding bay.
Praia Da Adraga
Adraga has a reputation as one of the most beautiful beaches on the continent. It sits in a peaceful location, surrounded by large cliffs that provide protection from the Atlantic waves. It sits by the town of Sintra, home to an extraordinary number of fantastic, reasonably priced, seafood restaurants.
Guincho
Guincho is a windswept, scenic beach, ideal for surfers and those who enjoy water-sports. The many bars and restaurants provide great views of the bay. Never overly crowded, this is an ideal beach for those wanting a bit of peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of Lisbon.
Caparica
Finally, picturesque and laid back Caparica Beach is easily accessible by bus from Lisbon. There are several beaches in close proximity, providing visitors with some great beach combing opportunities. Trendy bars and restaurants add to the vacation atmosphere.

The only beach we went to in/near Lisbon was Cascais. That was a pretty little seaside town with an equally pretty albeit small beach. There are spectacular cliff walks in the area as well. One of the things we liked about Lisbon (and there were many) was the proximity of water and the lovely big river right on their doorstep.

The beaches look gorgeous and Lisbon is somewhere that I have vague memories of from way back in 1979. I think we stayed at Porto, anyway it was a beautiful village by the sea on the north west coast.
We’ve explored a lot of Spain, but never found our way to Portugal. We are headed back to Europe for summer 2015, so we really need to put it on the schedule!
