Last Updated on December 11, 2014 by Nancie

Penang street food is world renowned, regularly finding its way on to top ten lists in Asia and around the world. Considered one of the top ten, and “must try” is a noddle dish, char kway teow. On this 205th week of Travel Photo Thursday (December 11th, 2014) join me as I sample what is billed as one of the top char kway teow stalls in the city.

Every Penang street food vendor wants to see their stall reviewed in the local paper.

This is what Mr. Ing had to say about his favorite char kway food stall, Sin Hwa Coffee Shop on Burma Road…

One of the reasons I wanted to eat at this particular stall was to try this dish made with duck eggs.

Tiny kitchen…I tried to chat the owner up, but he didn’t seem to be in a very good mood. I got there late, and  he probably had had a super busy morning. I think that’s the price you pay for getting reviewed in the newspaper 🙂

Far from glitzy, but they have been wowing the locals with their food for over 40 years!

And what you’ve all been waiting for…Char Kway Teow…and I was not disappointed. The dish was perfectly cooked with the noodles dry, and even a bit crispy. The duck eggs provided a much richer taste than the chicken eggs would have. The plump prawns were cooked to perfection. The chili gave the noodles just added little kick that it needed to tantalize the taste buds. Can you believe the price…$1.15US! If you opt for the chicken eggs, you’ll pay less! 🙂

I haven’t made this at home, but if you are so inclined here’s a recipe that I found on Malyasiafood.net.

  1. I bet the poor owner was frazzled by all the added attention. Even so he still managed to turn out a tasty meal. $1.15 makes me want to uproot myself and go live there pronto. I am going to look up the recipe now.

    • Hi Jan. I read a little about the history of this place. Apparently, the grandmother had run it for 40 years, and passed it on to the grandson. I’m wondering if the grandson was less than thrilled to find himself in front of a wok for the next 40!

  2. Nancie, I love Char Kway Teow…it looks delicious in your photo. I also really love duck! It is much richer and delicious! Now, I’m hungry!

    • Hi Corrine. Thanks! I agree, and I never pass up duck. When I read that Sin Hwa uses duck eggs I made sure that I found the place!

  3. YUM! I had as much of this as I could in Singapore. And people there kept telling me: yeah, it’s okay here but you’ve gotta come to my country of Malaysia. Food as introductions to a country? SOLD! Well, for another time … 😉

    • Hi Henry. I may have tried it in Singapore as well (can’t remember) You have a reason to go to Malaysia, or a return trip if you have been already 🙂

  4. Oh my, that looks so delicious! I can’t believe all that goodness is so cheap too. Gotta love SE Asian food – quality but at a bargain. Yum!

  5. Char Kway Teow is the food that I miss the most from Penang. I never tried it with duck eggs, but I bet it would be sublime. And you gotta love that price. I found a food trailer in Austin, Texas that makes Char Kway Teow, but it’s a 5 plate minimum order, and each plate is US$9. Ouch! Looking at the ingredient list and directions for making it on the link you posted, I am truly wishing I could just have someone make it for me cheap.

  6. Nice introductory photos, Nancie, and then the tasty conclusion! Asian food is just tops with me, for the variety.

  7. Actually IM Little Bit Fever That Whole Week. Monday To Friday. That Y My Mum Helping Me. Sorry For Dint Reply U In Good MooD. WaitingFor Yr Next Visit. I Already There’s 7 Years. Hope for Another 30 Years
