Welcome to the 176th week of  Travel Photo Thursday. This week  on the ROK, we’ve celebrated Children’s Day and Buddha’s Birthday. Now I’m “recovering” from all that down time and trying to answer the multitude of emails that always seem to flow in after an extra long weekend. Work can wait! Today I want to introduce you to a one of a kind Buddah that find its home in the tiny, picturesque town of Mae Hong Song in the northern most corner of Thailand.

To join in the Travel Photo Thursday fun simply post a photo on your blog.

The folks of Mae Hong Song are very proud of this beautiful Buddah. Lovenly woven by a local lady, townspeople believe the statue to be the only Buddah produced from 100% bamboo. At 10 feet tall, and 5 feet wide, this was definitely a major undertaking. I was amazed at the great attention to detail – a labor of love!

I wonder how it took to weave those fingers?!

Travelers Tip You’ll find the bamboo Buddha at Wat Chong Khan located in the center of town on the shore of Jong Cham Lake. The Wat is open everyday from sunrise to sunset.

Travel Photo Thursday – Mar.13/14- Mae Hong Son Misty Morning

Posted by on Mar 13, 2014 in Destinations, Featured, Mae Hong Son, Thailand, Travel Photo Thursday | 22 comments

Welcome to another week of Travel Photo Thursday (our 168th!). In keeping with the cold, drab, rainy week we are suffering here in Daejeon I am featuring some early morning shots of Northen Thailand’s sleepy Mae Hong Son.

To join in the Travel Photo Thursday fun simply post a photo on your blog.

Before arriving in Mae Hong Son, I had read that this hamlet of 10,000 is affectionately known as the “City of Three Mists”.  As we approached each curve (over 1700 of them) on that long bus ride, taking shots in the mist kept me going.  The movie “Play Misty for Me” (remember that one?) also kept popping into my head. Something had to kill the nine hours!

The best time for the winter mist is early morning. Alarm set for 6:30, and I was up and out the door 20 minutes later. Sunrise was scheduled for 6:15. Luckily I was staying very close to the lake, the towns centerpiece. Well it was gray, and it was misty,  no hint of sun. My real goal was to find some color popping out of all this gray. Here they are, with a bit of artistic license thrown in for good measure!

In addition to the mist, there were no people in sight. It was lovely to just wander around in the silence, with the mist curling over the lake.

Travelers Tip

If you go, take some warm clothes. It’s always cool in the morning.

I don’t recommend the bus (9 hours). Mini Van is comfy (5 hours). Flying is even better (under an hour!)

Travel Photo Thursday — January 23, 2014 — Mae Hong Son Moments

Posted by on Jan 23, 2014 in Destinations, Mae Hong Son, Thailand, Travel Photo Thursday | 33 comments

Welcome to another week of Travel Photo Thursday, week 161 (can you believe it!?). I’m in Mae Hong Son this week, after a very long bus ride from Chiang Mai; nine hours to be exact! Have enjoyed this laid back town for the past few days. Heading back to Chiang Mai tomorrow, and hopefully the trip back will be a few hours shorter. I’ve managed to secure a seat in a private van that only takes six hours! I’ve had some great photo opportunities while I’ve been here, and I’m going to share with you one of my favorite shots from the week.

Like most towns in Thailand, Mae Hong Song has its share of beautiful Buddhist temples. Although this is high season, the temples were often empty with the exception of the monks. I managed to catch this shot…

He looks like he could be doing some deep thinking, or maybe he’s just having a quiet peaceful moment 🙂
