Who can resist a cafe called “The Biscuit Eater”? That was my exact thought, when my sister casually mentioned this spot to me. I knew I had to visit, and I was not disappointed. Located just off of Mahone Bay’s main street, I was welcomed with this simple, yet appealing sign. I love books and coffee, so how could I go wrong?

I was hoping to sit in the pretty garden area, but as you can see it was full…

However, as you can see the inside dining area is charming and quaint. Don’t you just love the wrought iron chair and all those books?! You can see the order counter, where I made my selection (not easy!). Wait staff do deliver to your table.

One of the things I love about Nova Scotia is that we don’t have a lot of chain restaurants and coffees shops, especially when you travel outside of Halifax. You really are experiencing the local culture at its best!

I am a sucker for non-chain cafes which have a personality of their own. This is one of them and I would love it.
Denise, I am with you. Growing up in Nova Scotia, we didn’t have a lot of the chains and franchises. I was an adult before we ever had a MacDonald’s, and then it was 20 minutes from downtown. (Too bad we now have hundreds!)
I missed that place when I was in Mahone Bay and I definitely could have used a piece of carrot cake. I also loved the lack of chain stores!!
Hi Leigh, I probably would have missed it too, except that my sister lives close by. Yes, the lack of chains and franchises, particularly outside of Halifax really does give Nova Scotia that added charm.

I love places with no chain restaurants at all! And I love a place where I can sip and browse. This place is so charming I can stay there the whole day. I like its name, too. I’m loving Mahone’s Bay more.

Mahone Bay really is a gem. There are other towns in Nova Scotia that also qualify. I have plans to post about those as well. However, my personal favorite is definitely Mahone Bay.
As soon as I saw the sign and the building, Nancie, l knew l wanted to be there. After the cake and coffee photos, I wanted it to be right now. That’s my kind of place!
I’ve never seen Vietnamese coffee in Nova Scotia. I’m going to have visit this little cafe the next time I am home. Thanks for the tip!

Book, coffee, cake and pretty dormer windows. Life doesn’t get much better than Nova Scotia, Nancy! I love the fact that you say you don’t have many chains when it comes to ‘chain stores and restaurants’. It’s so wonderful to come across local culture, particularly when it’s packaged beautifully.

I have always loved the idea of books and a cafe, and this place you have shown us looks lovely. I like those comfy chairs and the relaxed feel by the pool. No wonder you enjoyed it there – I wish we had one where I live.

It’s becoming rare to find non-chain, local, charming places like these in Southern California. Glad to see Nova Scotia hasn’t been invaded by the chain places. This looks like a wonderful place to hang out the way coffee shops used to be. Yum on the carrot cake!
Hi Mary, Truly, Nova Scotia is so off the beaten track. Unless you are in Halifax, I think it would be impossible for a chain to survive…except of course Tim Hortons. Even Mahone Bay has a Timmy’s attached to the gas station!

I LOVE that patio and the inside dining area! For a second I thought it was your house; I actually had to read the bold paragraph to notice it was still part of the coffee shop.

One of our family rules during travel is no chain restaurants. They’re okay for the trip to and from our destination, but in the location, we eat non-chain. It’s a wonderful way to really experience an area.

I love the idea of a used books store with a cafe. My husband can browse books way longer than I can. So i love the idea of sitting down and having tea and scones while I wait for him to finish.
