Traveling to Bali for Christmas

One of my favorite times of the year is almost here. I know you’re probably thinking Christmas, but that’s not it. I love the holidays, but what I love even more is the beginning of my winter travel break. Due to an outbreak of H1N1 and my university opening two weeks late, winter break is late this year. I will literally be jogging to the bus stop on December 24th to catch the airport bus to Incheon Airport. Then it’s off to Kuala Lumpar via Malaysia Air. I’ll over night in KL and head to Bali on Christmas morning via Asia Air.

This isn’t the most direct route, but it is a good one for my budget. Flying direct from Seoul to Bali would have put me back approximately $1500.00 U.S. Instead I found and booked this flight to KL for under $700.00U.S. I used an online booking company called Vayama. They boast a user friendly interface, and booking was super easy. They also support a number of international credit cards including those issued in Korea. Initially, there was a bit of a glitch with my credit card. I called their toll free number and it was fixed by a REAL person in no time. I have to say that so far I am very impressed with Vayama.

I’ll be on Air Asia Christmas morning for the three hour flight to Bali. The cost of that ticket one way was just shy of $100.00 US. Air Asia is a terrific airline for any budget traveler. They often have fantastic sales. Last year I managed to snag a ticket from Bangkok to Yogyakarta, Indonesia for ONE CENT plus tax. The flight cost me a grand total of $9.00 !!! My only warning with Air Asia is that sometimes they change flights and are not very good at notifying customers. I have learned to always check before heading to the airport! Online booking is generally easy. I find their site works best with Internet Explorer.

I’ll be meeting a friend at the airport in Bali, and we will be heading directly to Ubud for 5 days. After checking into our hotel we’ll be sitting by the pool sipping champagne, and eating caviar and salmon. I’m counting the days!

Next time I’ll tell you about the hotels we booked in Bali and the online reservation companies that we used. Times might be tough, but finding good budget digs in Bali over Christmas and New Years was NOT easy.

Here are a couple of photos from my first trip to Bali a couple of years ago.
