Through the Sandbox Lens #23 — Wat Rong Khun

Last Updated on January 31, 2011 by Nancie

I spent this past weekend seeing the sights in and around Chiang Rai, which is Thailand’s most northern city. This trip is worthy of several blog posts, and they will happen. However, I wanted to post this shot of Wat Rong Khun, or as it is more commonly known “The White Temple.” This temple is the work and vision of Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. He has dedicated his life to building this temple. However, it will not be completed in his life time To describe this temple and the vision behind it is no easy task.

In the words of the artist….

“Money and possessions are insignificant. They are not mine, but are only make-beliefs. Merits belong to me; therefore, money is of no value to me. Money is valuable only as a way to make merit for further journey of the soul.”

Budget travelers will be happy to know that there is no admission charge. The temple closes promptly at 5pm, and has the cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen in Thailand!

  2. That is some intricate stonework there! And well, always a winner if the bathrooms are clean! I’d visit! 🙂

Nancie, I’m updating our travel link page. Yours have been there for long time, but I wonder whether you want to add a sentence of description to it or not. Let me know!

  4. A superb image, Nancie. (Glad to know about the bathrooms for future reference… Really!)
