Welcome to week 187 of Travel Photo Thursday! The Chinese community here in Penang are celebrating Hungry Ghost Month. According to Chinese folklore this is the month that the gates of hell open up, and the souls of Chinese ancestors to come to earth, wandering, bothering, and eating The living honor the dead, and appease them, by burning such things as joss-paper, and paper maché material goods, like houses and clothes. Chinese opera stages are set up in many neighborhoods, and loud performances run throughout the night. This can mean hell on earth for any visitor living close by! Here are some shots of the neighborhood opera that I attended the other evening. Thankfully, it wasn’t in my hood!
Apologies that I have been slow in getting around to everyone this past week. I have been on the go everyday. I promise to catch up with everyone soon!

The actors begin their make-up hours before the performance…
A smile for the camera…
The stage is as elaborate as the make-up…
The Performance, Act 1…
Lots of banging and ear splitting music.
Lots of wailing between the man and the woman.
Act 2… More wailing between the “learned” man and the older lady. The blue lady was in a very bad way.
Chinese opera can meander along for hours. Getting the gist of the story is like a child looking at a picture book before he/she can read. I loved the performance, but my throbbing ears thanked me for leaving at the end of Act 2. I’m thinking the story had something to do with unrequited love 🙂
Have you ever been to a Chinese Opera? What did you think?
