In reply to SoloFriendly. A maiko is a geiko in training. What I learned when I was in Japan is that the girls can enter "Maiko School" at the age of 16. Apparently, there is no age limit. They live in dormitories in Kyoto and go to school to learn things like the tea ceremony, dancing, playing an instrument.

I know nothing of Japanese culture…what is a maiko, and what is a geiko? I recognize te makeup and costume from photos, but I have no idea what their role is.

Hi Dina, It really is a matter of luck. I also went on a walking tour and saw another on her way to work. I haven't posted that shot yet. I was definitely at the right place at the right time!

Love it, Nancy! Gorgeous moment, you capture her movement and mood there. I tried to spot some Maiko when we were in Kyoto years ago. I forget in Pontocho or Gion district. But there was none of them.
