Portugal: A Delicious Prix Fix Menu

Posted by on Feb 4, 2016 in Destinations, Food, Portugal, Portugal, Travel Photo Thursday | 17 comments

Welcome to another week of Travel Photo Thursday, week 264 (2/3/2016)! Anyone who has traveled in Europe knows that prix fix menus are a common occurrence in restaurants across Europe. Today, join me on a photo tour of amazingly delicious prix fix menu at the 3 Marias close by the seaside village of Olhos D’Aqua, here in the Algarve.

Internet connections seem to be my nemesis this trip, so please forgive me if I haven’t been to your blog as often as I would like.

We’re pretty easy going here at BTS, but please remember to follow a few guidelines…

To join in the Travel Photo Thursday fun simply post a photo on your blog.

Return here and place your link in the Mr. Linky at the bottom of this post.

Please post a link to a post featuring a travel photo, not simply a link to your blog.

The Twitter hashtag for Travel Photo Thursday is #TPThursday.

Only one link per blog, please.

My intent today was to take a long walk and find a new beach. I managed to do both, and find a lovely little restaurant serving up a perfect Prix Fix Menu!

My new beach was the lovely Praia Maria Luisa. The beach is a lovely sandy cove with cliffs that have steps and trails going to top. The views are worth the climb!

If you look closely, you can see the archway in the cliff. This shot was taken from ground level.

Now, if you look at this shot, which was taken from the top of the cliff,  you can see the round crater like hole and the back of the archway. I like the differences from the two vantage points.

I love those weird looking trees on top of the cliffs, and they’re quite common here.

The walking, climbing, and sea air had me thinking about lunch. I hiked back up to the road and decided to continue along to Olhao D’Aqua. I soon found myself staring at 3 restaurants strung along the highway. Two were open, and I chose the 3 Marias. I think it was the brightly colored table clothes that caught my eye, and it wasn’t as crowded as the other one.

I arrived shortly after 2pm and there were still a few people dining. The restaurant closes at 3pm, and I was the last to leave. Don’t you love the table clothes?!

The prix fix menu included numerous beverages. I decided on the half bottle of red wine; full bodied and smooth.

Prix Fix Menu

This is one of the freshest salads I have ever eaten. I would not have been surprised to see the kitchen staff picking and preparing the vegetables as they were ordered. I added a tiny bit of olive oil and some pepper. Outstanding!

I’ve been eating a lot of fish here in Portugal. It’s just so fresh and delicious, and the Portuguese preparation techniques are high on keeping the flavors intact. Also, the nuclear power plant accidents in Japan make me think twice of eating fish caught in Asian waters.

I love sole fillets, and this is the first time I have seen them on offer anywhere outside of Canada. They were cooked to melt in your mouth perfection, and I savored every morsel.

Meat choices were also available.

The Portuguese know how to make pie. This apple tart was just sweet enough, and accompanying whipped cream was the real thing!

A prix fix menu provides a delicious meal at a great price. This menu was 12.50 Euro, and at least from what I am seeing, that seems to be a the high end for many of the restaurants here in this part of the Algarve. However, the food quality was excellent, and I think good value.

Do you have a favorite prix fix menu?

  1. A beach walk followed by a lovely meal and a delish Portuguese pastry! Does it get any better than that?

    • Hi Anita. Honestly, I don’t think it does. Life is good!

  2. Oh my, I don’t know if I could have passed up that deal on a meal – but then I’d have napped my afternoon away or been asleep early that evening. The beach is stunning. I am loving your beach explorations – they are really postcard perfect!

    • Hi Jackie! I still had to walk home, or I would have been curled up somewhere for a snooze! 🙂

  3. Your Algarve posts have me dreaming of seafood, beaches and that beautiful country. Wish we made it to the coast. This is such a delicious looking meal and for cheap too. One of the things we appreciated about Portugal was the great meals that were so affordable.

    • Hi Mary. The Algarve really is beautiful. You will have to come back!

  4. What a stunning little beach!

    • Hi Lydia! I love it, and I had the entire place to myself! 🙂

  5. The beach cliffs and trees are beautiful! The more I learn about Portugal, the more I want to see it. The pie looks delicious. 🙂

  6. Yes I do love those table clothes, that would have inspired me to step inside as well and that apple looks delish – I love apple pie (not hot just warms like yours with the cream just starting to melt).

  7. The walk along the beach would have me thinking about lunch too, which looked delicious. I don’t think you can mind about paying a little extra for delicious food. I’ve been enjoying your pics of Portugal. Happy travels.

  8. What a banquet! And the location? Couldn’t be better! The shots of the arch look very different. I would love to beach hop around the Algarve since I know that there are tons of arches and stacks in the area. Didn’t know there is good apple pie in Portugal.

  9. I’ve never had a fixed menu meal although I know they are cost effective for what you get. That salad is nearly leaping off the plate. I like it when people put a lot of thought into preparing a nice salad.

  10. You are bringing back memories of when we went to the Algarve. I already mentioned you are making me want to go back.
    I am craving fish!!!

  11. You are so right! Eating the menu of the day, a fixed price is usually the best deal around. I love them. It’s a great way to save money and really have some delicious food.

  12. Most prix fix menus that I come across in America seem to be for the more expensive restaurants. Yours is quite reasonable. The fish looks so delicious, and I’m always up for apple tart. We probably would have picked that restaurant because my daughter’s name is Maria, and then we could joke the whole time about wondering where the other 2 are. Lovely beach walk and photos, too.

  13. I’m enjoying your travels through Portugal Nancie. I love that you also bring a lot of the local cuisine to us. Keep enjoying it!
