Cooking Schools in Bangkok
Cooking schools in Bangkok are a dime a dozen, so before choosing Cooking with Poo and Friends for a Thai cooking experience I did a fair bit of research. I finally chose Cooking with Poo because Poo has an excellent reputation, and she runs the Urban Neighbours of Hope (UNOH), a charity working to improve the lives of those living in the Klong Tuey Slum Community where she has lived for many years. I also got to visit the Klong Toey Fresh Market.
Please note: if anyone reading this goes Ewwww, regarding the poo word. In Thailand, Poo is a popular name for females, so it’s not meant in the context of “going number 2” 🙂
Cooking Classes in Bangkok
All participants received hands-on cooking instruction from Poo. You’ll find the four dishes we prepared in the cookbook if you’re the lucky winner. We treated our taste buds to:
- Spicy Beef Salad (Yam Neua) – Page 32
- Green Curry (Gaeng Khiaw Waan) – Page 64
- Stir Fried Noodles (Phad Thai) – Page 86 (my favourite)
- Mango and Sticky Rice (Khao Niaow Ma-Muang) – Page 96 (my favourite dessert)
In addition to the four dishes, I cooked in Poo’s class, the cookbook contains at least 40 popular recipes featuring Thai appetizers, soups, curries, salads and desserts. Each recipe is carefully laid out, including colourful appetite inducing photos. You also learn more about Poo, her family, and her life in the Klong Tuey Slum Community.
There are step-by-step recipes for every dish in the book and gorgeous photos accompanying each. If that doesn’t inspire you to get cooking, it may get you checking your restaurant app for the closest Thai restaurant in your neighbourhood. Believe it or not, we have an amazing Thai restaurant in a wee hamlet less than an hour from Annapolis Royal; Thai Memory. The last time I dined there my friend had the Phad Thai and was delighted with the authentic Thai flavours.

I purchased the cookbook “Cooking with Poo” the day I took the class. I have not received compensation from Cooking with Poo.
