More Deliciousness from Penang…

Welcome to week 195 of Travel Photo Thursday. It seems that I have been neglecting the blog lately, but neglect is not really the right word. There were a couple of weeks where I simply couldn’t sit for long, without bringing on severe back pain. Thankfully, lots of walking and making a conscience effort to not sit for such long stretches seems to have fixed the problem. Of course,  you’ve all heard the woes of my bad Internet connection. That seems to be solved, although I don’t think my provider has done anything about my neighbor poaching his Internet access from me! All that explaining has made me hungry, and I am taking you back to the Pearly’s kitchen at the Penang Home Cooking School to give a peek at the final dish we prepared during my delicious day at Penang Home Cooking School. If you missed my previous post, you can check out the delicious curry and roti jala , here.

Our final dish was Pie Tie, and not one that I was familiar with. First, we prepared the chicken filling.

Cats, Cats, and more Cats…Love this one, but was located inside the gates of a private clan temple, and I never managed to go by when the gates were open. I could only shoot through the gate rails.

“Trishaw man” is one of the bigger murals (and one of my favs), but believe it or not, unless you’re looking for, it it’s easy to miss. Located on Upper Penang Road, close to the Cititel Hotel.

Penang’s Must Do Cooking Class

Penang’s Must Do Cooking Class…

Pearly Kee, with her husband Chandra, run the popular Penang Home Cooking School. If you are in Penang, don’t hesitate to book a class and try your hand at cooking some authentic Malaysian cuisine. Your class will begin with a tour of the Pulau Tikus Market. Delicious veggies, herbs and spices, fresh meat and fish; all available here for your cooking pleasure. Pearly is very knowledgeable about all the ingredients that she uses in her cooking, and loves to share this knowledge with her students.

Have you ever tried fresh lotus root? It’s very popular in Asian cooking. The Korean’s love them pickled. I’ve never cooked with the fresh, but often buy it pickled, here in Korea.

Travel Photo Thursday — 28/8/14 — Penang’s Padded Art

Posted by on Aug 28, 2014 in Destinations, Featured, Malaysia, Penang, Travel Photo Thursday | 24 comments

Here we are for week 191 of Travel Photo Thursday. Welcome! Happy to say that my back seems to be on the mend (touch wood). Classes start on Monday, so lots of prep work happening here. The funny thing is, we have a major holiday, Chuseok, beginning on September 7th. We don’t come back to classes until the 12th. I am anticipating that more than a few students won’t be back until after! There was no end to the art work on display in Penang, and some of it was just a tad on the quirky side.

I wonder how many women are missing their bras, in Pengang! 🙂

Can you imagine riding around Georgetown on this?!

I found this quirky exhibit at the Hin Bus Depot Art Centre. In case you missed last week’s Travel Photo Thursday that is also home to the Ponytail Girl. You can read the art centre’s opening hours and location over at that post.

What’s the quirkiest street art you’ve ever encountered?

Travel Photo Thursday — 21/08/14 — Penang’s Ponytail Girl

Posted by on Aug 21, 2014 in Destinations, Featured, Malaysia, Penang, Travel Photo Thursday | 19 comments

Welcome to week 190 of  Travel Photo Thursday. I’m back in Daejeon, bad back and all. Sitting is a bit of a challenge at the moment, and right now I am alternating between cold and heat. Hopefully, this won’t last too long. Penang is an outstanding destination for anyone who likes art. The city has an abundance of wall murals, many of them the creations of professional artists. One of my favorites is what I call “The Ponytail Girl”. I her discovered my last day on the island. Have a look, and see why I like her so much.

Created by Ernest Zacharevic, the artist credited for bringing mural street art to Penang.

Perfect spot for the Ponytail Girl…

Love, love, love  the contrast of the red bow on her yellow dress.

Durian: The King of Fruit in Penang

Durian: The King of Fruit in Penang…

Welcome to week 189 of Travel Photo Thursday. I’m still suffering from a lousy Internet connection. Fingers crossed that this will get posted. Last week I had a durian adventure. Here in Asia durian are known as the “King of Fruit”. In all my years of traveling in the region I have never tried it. Why? Well, some of you might know this, it’s also called “Smelly fruit”. The stuff stinks to high heaven, and it’s not a nice smell. The word that comes to mind is “rank”. Never mind, I decided that I was being silly, and just happened to run into a street cart doing a brisk durian business. Now or never!
