Boseong Green Tea Festival

April and May ushers in the tea season here in Korea and Korean traditional tea is celebrated at the Boseong Green Tea Festival in May. Welcome to week 329 (5/25/2107) of Travel Photo Thursday. Enjoy this photo essay of everything the festival has to offer.

We arrived in a gentle rain and climbed the hill past the lush terraced tea fields to our first stop, the tea leaf drying shed.  We were supposed to pick the leaves before arriving at the drying shed, but the inclement weather resulted in a quick change of plans.

Korea: Favorite Photos from Buddha’s Birthday Celebrations

Buddha’s Birthday Celebrations

This week there are Buddha’s birthday celebrations across Korea. The big day was yesterday, May 3rd. Welcome to week 326 (5/4/2017) of Travel Photo Thursday. I must admit that I stayed away from the festivities this year. However, over my years in Korea, I have attended many gatherings celebrating Buddha’s birthday. Here is a collection of some of my favorite photos taken over the years. Enjoy!

The colors and the smiles make this photo an all time favorite. For the most part, Koreans usually aren’t the happiest, but something seems to happen during Buddha’s birthday celebrations, and the smiles are contagious.

Korean Ceramics Shopping in Yeoju, Korea

Korean Ceramics

Two weeks ago I had a fun day ogling and purchasing a few pieces of lovely and practical Korean Ceramics in the City of Yeoju, a 90-minute drive east of Seoul. Welcome to week 325 (4/27/2017) of Travel Photo Thursday. Come in and see the pieces that will be making their way back to Canada and my new condo later this year.

If you are in Seoul and you want to purchase Korean ceramics or pottery, avoid the touristy shops in Itaewon or Insadong. Instead, grab a public bus or find a tour going to Yeosu. The city has been producing quality ceramics and pottery for centuries. Here you will pay a quarter of the price for the same vase or dish-set you may have eyed in downtown Seoul.

Our first stop didn’t look like much, but once inside there was lots to choose from.

Seoul’s Urban Gardens: A Photo Essay

Posted by on Apr 20, 2017 in Destinations, Korea, Travel Photo Thursday | 19 comments

Seoul’s urban gardens pop up all over the city in the spring. At least that’s what I call the tiny (and sometimes not so tiny) patches of flowers you’ll find in almost every neighborhood in the city this time of the year. Welcome to week 325 (4/20/2017) of Travel Photo Thursday. Sorry for being late this week. I’m in midterm exam mode, and on top of that, I jammed my finger in my front gate last night…OUCH. It’s tricky typing without that finger. You can see the damage on my Facebook feed. Now onto the good stuff, pretty photos of Seoul’s urban gardens.

All of these shots were taken between Itaewon Subway Station, Line 6, and my apartment in Haebangcheon (about a 25-minute walk). I came out of exit 2 and walked straight. I think shot shows perfectly how no space is ever wasted.

Korea’s Cherry Blossoms: Seoul National Cemetery

Korea’s Cherry Blossoms

This past week I stayed in Seoul to enjoy Korea’s cherry blossoms at their height. Welcome to week 324 (4/13/2017) of Travel Photo Thursday. I spent several hours at the Seoul National Cemetery on Sunday where they were at their peak. The crowds peaked by 2:00 pm as well and it was time for me to head home. I did go back on Monday afternoon to get a few more shots. The crowds were a bit thinner, but not by much. However, that’s the price you have to pay in Seoul or anywhere else in Korea to see the Korea cherry blossoms at their height, and it is worth fighting the madding crowds :). I hope you enjoy browsing these shots as much as I enjoyed taking them.

 Cherry Blossoms in Seoul

The Seoul National Cemetery is the resting place of approximately 165,000 service men and women who lost their lives in the Korean War and other battles. The cemetery is a war history buffs dream.
