Beautiful Prague for Travel Back Saturday

Posted by on Nov 9, 2014 in Czech - Prague, Destinations, Featured, Travel Back Saturday, Travel Photogrphy | 7 comments

I have so many great photos that never seem to see the light of day that I have decided to start a new weekly feature here at Budget Travel Sandbox. My first “Travel Back Saturday” features Prague, a city I came to love during the month I spent there a couple of years ago.

This first shot, showcasing Prague’s show stopping historic architecture, was taken from popular Kampa Island. The island is easily accessible from Prague’s historic Charles Bridge in Malá Strana(the Lesser Town).  Did you know that in 2011 Kampa Island was voted the second most romantic island in the world?

In this photo, to the very left, is the entrance to the Charles Bridge.

Travel Photo Thursday — 09/18/14 — Night Time Prague

Posted by on Sep 18, 2014 in Czech - Prague, Featured, Travel Photo Thursday | 26 comments

Welcome to week 194! My apologies for this post being late and somewhat brief. My ongoing Internet problems became a huge issue this week. I had to call in the telephone company not once but twice. The first technician put a cable in the wrong outlet, and made things worse. It took a second technician, more than 24 hours later, to fix the problem. Isn’t it amazing how something that sounds so simple, a cable in the wrong outlet, can cause an entire system to go down! I’ve been going through some photo files this week, and have enjoyed perusing a number of night shots of Prague from the banks of the Vitava River. I usually don’t do justice to night shots, but these shots I do like.

Travel Photo Thursday — 7/03/14 — Windows on Europe

Posted by on Jul 3, 2014 in Budapest, Czech - Prague, Destinations, Hungary, Karlovy Vary, Travel Photo Thursday | 34 comments

Welcome to the 184th week of Travel Photo Thursday! I’m finishing my second week of summer school teaching, a 15 week course crammed into 3 weeks. Trust me, it’s brutal. I’m teaching a required basic English course that is designed to be fail proof! I do have a few students who are wonderful (not sure how they ended up here), but most of them would not react to a fire lit directly under their butts! I had originally planned to be in Europe this summer, but this summer school session put a damper on those plans. As thrilled as I am to be heading off to Penang in just over a week, there remains some wistful thinking directed at Europe. I love photographing windows and doors, and this week I bring you a few of my favorite windows from Hungary’s Budapest and Czech’s Karlovary.

To join in the Travel Photo Thursday fun simply post a photo on your blog.

My favorites from Budapest. Windows always set my imagination on fire…

I love the carving at the top. He looks more than a little ferocious!

So peaceful looking… A far cry from her “brother’ in the shot above:)

Colorful and detailed in Budapest. I am not a big lover of the color orange, but it definitely works with this window!

And to end this window on Europe, two of my favorite window shots from Czech’s picturesque Karlovy Vary…

What a blast of color from the shutters, and the blast of fuchsia…

Lennon and Love Locks on Prague’s Kampa Island

Posted by on Mar 24, 2014 in Czech - Prague, Destinations, Featured | 25 comments

I fell in love with Prague long before I arrived. My research quickly revealed that I probably would never tire of the history, the architecture, the neighborhoods, or the food and beer. I was intrigued by everything I read; from blog posts to guidebooks. I was eager to walk the cobblestone streets, gawk at the amazing architecture, climb a few towers, and stroll over the historic Charles Bridge, with its iconic views.  I especially wanted to spend some time exploring Kampa Island, located directly off the Charles Bridge in historic Mala Strana (Lesser Quarter). In addition to discovering all that Kampa has to offer, I wanted to experience the true ambience of the island, so I decided to stay on the Island for a couple of days. Using the Venere hotel booking site I was able to quickly book a room that met all my needs at a reasonable price.

After getting settled into my room, I was off  to view the colorful, graffiti laden  John Lennon Wall, which attracts artists and tourists from all over the world. I spent quite a bit of time here simply reading the messages, watching visitors add their graffiti to the wall, and taking photographs.

Adding a message to the wall.

Adding a message to the wall.

The stream of people never stopped, and I was surprised at how young some of them were. At first I wondered if these young ones even understood the significance of the wall.  When Lennon was murdered in 1980 the graffiti covered wall was started by Czech youth as a monument to free speech and non-violent rebellion against the regime. No amount of white washing could make the wall disappear. Many say that that the wall inspired the non-violent Velvet Revolution, which led to the fall of Communism in the Czech Republic in 1989.

Imagine

Imagine

John Lennon would have approved.

John Lennon would have approved.

I left the wall with the feeling that John would have approved of these young people carrying on his legacy of peace. That  famous song hummed in my head for days.

Graffiti in the name of peace.

Graffiti in the name of peace.

Just steps from the wall is a bridge with it’s rails covered with love locks. I’m sure Lennon would have approved!

Lovers declare their everlasting love on Kampa Island.

Lovers declare their everlasting love on Kampa Island.

They come in all shapes, sizes and colors. I’m sure each has its own unique story attached.

The perfect ending…

I totally enjoyed the two days I spent on Kampa Island, and it’s on my “to return to list” one day. Have you been? What were your impressions?

Travel Photo Thursday — November 7, 2013 — My Travels During the Past 150 Posts

Posted by on Nov 7, 2013 in Budapest, Czech - Prague, Destinations, Hungary, Korea, Nova Scotia, Travel Photo Thursday | 28 comments

Welcome to another week of Travel Photo Thursday, and a special week it is! This is our 150th Travel Photo Thursday…(drum roll please)!! Hard to believe that this little link-up started back in December, 2009 on the first anniversary of Budget Travelers Sandbox. My first post is here.  The group has been pretty fluid, with people coming and going. We usually have between 20 and 30 photographers linking every week. Just as important, most of us comment and share each others weekly posts. Lovely friendships have formed. Two of our linkers have been with us from the very beginning. I could tell who they are, but let’s have some fun. Leave your guess in the comments, and try not to peek!

A big THANK YOU  to contributors, present and past,  to our weekly virtual photo journey. Without all of YOU this weekly meet-up would never have become such a great success. VIRTUAL HUGS TO ONE AND ALL!!

I’ve covered more than a few miles since our first Travel Photo Thursday. My camera has clicked in Canada, the U.S.A., Thailand, Singapore, Bali, Japan, China, Taiwan, Czech, Spain, Hungary since 2009. Of course, how can I forget my home way from home…KOREA.

To join in the Travel Photo Thursday fun simply post a photo on your blog.

Through the Sandbox Lens #54 — An Enchanting Prague Canal

Posted by on Aug 20, 2013 in Czech - Prague, Through the Sandbox Lens | 13 comments

I was going through photos this week and came across this gorgeous shot taken at Prague’s Kampa Island, easily accessible from the Charles Bridge. I spent quite a bit of time on Kampa Island, visiting the museums, the John Lennon Wall, and eating in the restaurants. I would love to go back. Have you visited Kampa Island? What did you think?
